Two new models -- Simple and Clever -- will be added to BMW's "Concept Vehicles" special exhibition. The names are catchy, aren't they? Actually, they're acronyms. Simple stands for the project name: "A sustainable and innovative mobility product for low energy consumption." Meanwhile, Clever is really the "Compact Low Emission Vehicle for Urban Transport" project. Simple merges features and advantages from both automobiles and motorcycle while Clever came about as a result of a research project to produce a low-emission, practical city vehicle. The Simple concept vehicle has a slim design (110 cm wide) similar to a motorcycle; but like an automobile, the occupants are protected from the wind and weather and are shielded from exterior noise.
Leaning into corners is easily accomplished. Powering Simple is a 36 kW combustion engine. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h is achievable at less than 10 seconds, while the drag coefficient is 0.18. Using the electric motor and the combustion engine, Simple would need only 6 kWh (equivalent to 0.7 liters of petrol) or two liters over 100 km. The Clever concept is a three-wheeled vehicle with its occupants seated one behind the other. The vehicle is equipped with a low-emission natural gas single-cylinder engine with 230 cc displacement and output of 12.5 kW. It is powered by natural gas from two compressed-gas cylinders. The design situates the driver and passenger in a crash-optimized aluminum space frame with computer-controlled tilting during cornering.
