BMW to co-develop and share the next-generation Mini platform

In what appears to be a complete turnaround, BMW Group now says that it is willing to co-develop and share the next-generation Mini platform with another automaker. Wolfgang Armbrecht, Mini's vice president of brand management, said that the door is still open and that it has to be realistic as far as economics are concerned. PSA/Peugeot-Citroen SA currently supplies a 1.6-liter gasoline engine for Mini. Last March, BMW Group CEO Norbert Reithofer announced that negotiations to co-develop and share the next-generation platform with the Italian brand Alfa Romeo have ended. Back then, Reithofer said that in the future "a Mini has to drive like a Mini," and so it was decided that the partnership of the Mini and Alfa Romeo brands for a possible common platform doesn't make any sense.
