Production of BMW's flagship, the 7-Series, will resume at the Avtotor auto plant in Kaliningrad in the spring, according to BMW Russia President Christian Kremer. Production of the new 5 series will also begin in this factory. The 7-Series was assembled in this plant back in 1999, when it was one of the first BMW models assembled in Russia. The new version, which will have a 2.5-liter engine, will go on sale in May and will be priced from $70,000. BMW Russia wants to equip the BMW 535i with a 3.0-liter, 306-horsepower engine and wants to sell this at prices above $80,000. For now, Avtotor makes five BMW models (the current 3 and 5 Series, the X3 crossover and the X5 and X6 SUVs). Last year in Russia, BMW sold 16,365 cars, 7,000 of which were assembled in Kaliningrad. Because of the recession, the car market in Russia dropped by more than 50% but BMW posted only a 10% drop in sales. It's notable that last month, BMW increased its Russian sales by more than 20% compared to the same period last year. BMW aims to attract more Russian customers by the end of 2012 by upgrading its model range.
