A deal has been reached between Fisker Automotive and BMW over the use of turbocharged four-cylinder engines and other components. Each year, BMW will supply a total of 100,000 turbocharged four-pots, with the powerplants to be used for Fisker's future Project Nina, a medium class range-extended hybrid vehicle that will go into production in 2012. The details on what other parts BMW will supply have not been released yet. It’s believed that Fisker was impressed the most by the BMW engines’ fuel efficiency as its products also boast of having such a high level.
CEO Henrik Fisker said that the BMW engine was an obvious choice as BMW is recognized for having the “best and most fuel efficient gasoline engines in the world.” Project Nina will enable the company to expand operations as it’s priced at US$50,000, making it more affordable than the Fisker Karma. It will be offered in other markets as well. Three body types are available: a sedan, a shooting-brake, and a cabrio.
Fisker ‘s CEO and Executive Design Director, Henrik Fisker, comments; "The BMW engine was an obvious choice for us, as BMW is known for producing the best and most fuel efficient gasoline engines in the world. We are very pleased to have signed this agreement with BMW."
