Bmw working on two internal combustion engines and an electric engine

BMW's patent for a drivetrain that combines two internal combustion engines and an electric engine has recently been granted. The hybrid system involves a "split engine" approach where the car is driven by one of the engines and the electric motor is moving at low speeds (or while cruising at low RPM). As soon as more power is required, the second engine starts and provides extra acceleration and performance. The patent document didn't provide many details but both engines were said to be two cylinder units. It's easy to see how this technology will be leveraged since BMW has an excellent range of two cylinder engines from Motorrad. [via bimmerfile]
