It was announced by BMW that its design chief, Chris Bangle, will be quitting the company and the auto business after 17 years. Famous for his attractive and notorious designs like the X6 and the preceding generation 7-series, Bangle will be replaced by Adrian van Hooydonk, who heads the BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce design. Bangle was reported to "pursue his own design-related endeavors" outside the car business. The influence of Bangle on the company is significant and his involvement in the success of BMW has been "decisive." Bangle, now 52, have come up with designs that proved to be successful commercially including the flame-surfacing effect which he pioneered on the Fiat Coupe but propelled to fame by the BMW 5-series and Z4 have reached a broad following.
