Bmw’s MegaCity urban transport car reported to be progressing

2010 Bmw 3-SeriesBMW has confirmed that work on the MegaCity urban transport car, which is being developed under BMW’s Project i initiative, is progressing nicely. Designed to be “extreme light weight,” the MegaCity will be made of carbonfiber-reinforced plastics and will be powered by a battery-driven electric motor.

The Simple concept, which is made from carbonfiber, illustrates some of BMW’s plans for the car. However, they won’t have the same look. BMW has entered a cooperative deal with German firm SGL Carbon, which will make carbonfiber produced in both Europe and the US. What this signifies is that there will be two production sites for the city car. BMW chief executive Norbert Reithofer said that the carmaker is acquiring pioneering future technologies and raw materials that will allow for the MegaCity vehicle to be competitive. In addition, BMW has also entered a joint venture with Bosch and Korean firm Samsung, which will provide the lithium ion batteries for the MegaCity vehicle.
