Bob Lutz may return to GM as a paid consultant

Former General Motors Co. product chief Robert Lutz may be taking on an advisory role in the carmaker, according to a report from The Detroit News. GM and Lutz have been in discussions about coming back as a paid consultant. Last May, Lutz retired from GM after a 47-year career in the auto industry; however, he still has a close relationship with many of GM's senior executives and speaks frequently with CEO Daniel Akerson. In a phone interview, Lutz said that no formal offer has been made but he said that if GM asks him to be a consultant, he would be “very happy to consider it."
GM Vice Chairman Stephen Girsky told investors in New York City Tuesday that they call on Lutz "every now and then," but downplayed the company's need for more "car guys." GM declined to confirm this report but if GM does bring back a senior executive as a consultant, it won’t be the first time.
After former GM CEO Fritz Henderson left in 2009, he came back to work as a consultant to the company. He has since left GM. Lutz, who has recently completed writing a memoir of his career, is considered a legend in the industry. He is largely credited for engineering a design renaissance at GM. In addition, he has held senior positions at the Detroit's Big Three automakers. In recent years, he oversaw some of the industry's most daring designs such as the Dodge Viper and the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric car. [via TheDetroitNews]
