Bosch to receive a major contract to develop electric car batteries for Volkswagen

A source told Reuters that Bosch will receive a major contract to develop electric car batteries for Volkswagen AG. This means that Bosch will be VW’s second battery supplier. The first is Sanyo. Amid worldwide governments tightening their standards on emissions and fuel economy, carmakers are struggling to remain competitive.

One obvious approach is to hasten plans to develop pure electric vehicles, gasoline-electric hybrids, and plug-in hybrids. Volkswagen said that by 2013, it plans to already have launched all-electric vehicles in 2013. It also aims that by 2018, its zero-emission vehicles will make up 3% of its sales.

Aside the high prices of batteries, another challenge that automakers have to address is the limited range of all-electric vehicles. Neither Bosch nor VW have commented on this report.
