Breaking News: 2010 British Motor Show canceled

British Motor Show LogoBecause of the ongoing global financial crisis, the 2010 British International Motor Show has been canceled. The organizers of the event did not want to proceed with the motor show against a background of uncertainty. In order to determine a course of action they asked the carmakers if they can commit to the show. Since the carmakers are unanimously in the middle laying off workers, reducing salaries, lowering working hours and attempting to save cash, it would be truly foolish for them to get on with the show and spend considerable amounts of money at a time like this. So, it was no surprise when they were also unanimous in saying that they cannot commit. The organizers promptly proceeded to cancel the event, saying that they will be back when things get better, although no one knows for sure when that will be. Continued after the jump! According to them, if an upturn occurs in the next six months that will equal the downturn in the previous months, the possibility of reorganizing the event will be as early as 2011. But it‚ highly unlikely. The possibility of doing it in 2012 is slim considering the London Olympics. So, the earliest and most realistic date would be 2013. The organizer for International Motor Industry Events (IMIE), Rob Mackenzie said that they support the decision of the Motor Show to cancel BIMS until market conditions become more favorable so that they can deliver a truly world class event that reflects the UK auto industry. The cancellation will also give them time to evaluate what they really want to do and where they really want to go with the show. They will also consider learning from other shows and make a decision based on their evaluation. [via autocar]
