Breaking News: Electric cars to minimize their recharging times

Chevrolet VoltThere could be an impending breakthrough in recharging times for Electric Vehicles. An article published by Nature, a scientific journal, says that researchers at MIT, namely, Gerbrand Ceder and Byoungwoo, have developed a set of lithium ion battery cells that can be charged to full capacity in just a few seconds. In theory, the same technology can charge a laptop to 100 percent capacity in about 1 minute. The current charging time for Electric Vehicles is 10 hours, but with this technology that could be cut to only an hour. Electricity is generated when lithium ions flow through electrolyte, from an electrode to a cathode in lithium ion batteries. When recharging, the process is reversed. In available systems the lithium ion batteries take too long to charge for reason that lithium ions take a long time to move through electrolyte. The solution to this is to coat the lithium iron phosphate in the cathode with lithium phosphate glass to speed up the movement. Lithium phosphate glass is an efficient lithium conductor thus charging process is significantly shortened. [via autocar]
