Britain to support GM for Vauxhall’s future
At the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) conference, Lord Mandelson has pledged to put up cash to secure Vauxhall’s future in the UK if ongoing talks eventually reveal General Motors Co.’s commitment to the country.
Lord Mandelson spoke to Autocar and said that taxpayers’ money would be brought out depending on what GM Europe boss Nick Reilly discloses at the end of the month on what its restructuring plans would be. When asked directly if Britain is prepared to put up money, Lord Mandelson answered with an emphatic “yes.” His only condition was that GM should have good news for Vauxhall in the UK. There have been rumors that £300 million would be made available but he declined to elaborate on them and only said that the negotiation is ongoing.
