Fishy German online ad seeks to sell upcoming LaFerrari Spyder for $5.8 million

Article by Christian A., on May 16, 2016

The first of Ferrari’s mild hybrid sports cars, the Ferrari LaFerrari has earned the title as one of the best hybrid sports cars that has ever been developed. Only 499 units were produced from 2010 up to 2015. Each of these cars is sought after by Ferrari fans and car collectors, easily beating any other exotic sports car in the market.

Being a hybrid, the LaFerrari runs on a 789-horsepower V12 engine and an additional 161 horsepower from its electric motor. It is capable of sprinting through tracks like a Bugatti Chiron but with a reduced displacement. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds and has an estimated top speed of over 217 mph. At the Fiorano Test Circuit, the LaFerrari achieved a lap time of 1:19.70, making it the fastest road-legal Ferrari-made car.

Recently at an interview with Automobile Magazine, FCA head and Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed that a Ferrari LaFerrari Spyder is set for production -- good news for those who were not able to purchase the coupe version of the hybrid sports car. Marchionne adds that they have already tapped potential customers for the LaFerrari Spyder, all the more making it even more believable that a convertible version is up for production.

Potential customers are said to have received a special gift box with an outline of a convertible LaFerrari at a special event, a giveaway for its impending production. There has also been leaked information that FXX K owners will be the first in line to get the new LaFerrari. There has been no mention of the production date and price for the LaFerrari Spyder but there are rumours that only 150 to 200 units shall be produced. As expected, the LaFerrari is definitely the sports car built only for a chosen few.

The LaFerrari Spyder will absolutely be a spectacle once it gets into production and distribution. We know a lot of you can’t wait ‘til it sets foot (or wheels) on our streets and that includes car distributors.

Apparently, a German company called Investment Cars Gmbh has released an ad on online automotive marketplace Mobile.de saying that they are pre-selling a Ferrari LaFerrari Spyder. Hold your horses and don’t jump the gun just yet. This ad is shady in various ways and we’ll explain to you why we think so.

First, the said company seems to only exist as a profile at Mobile.de. There’s not much known of the company except for its Mobile.de post thus many are suspicious of its legitimacy. But this is not the only suspicious part of the ad because apparently, it is setting an outrageous price for its LaFerrari Spyder.

It says in the ad that the car is sold for a whopping 5.1 million Euros or approximately $5.8 million. For a production car, this price is too much and is higher than the original $1.4 million LaFerrari coupe base price. Moreover, the ad also claims that only 70 units will be produced and that delivery will be within six months after placing an order. Right…

It doesn’t take a genius to know that this ad is nothing but a scam. Ferrari is known to give its best cars only to its most loyal and high-profile customers so most likely not just anyone can own a LaFerrari Spyder. Although the production number may be close to that in the ad but with Marchionne at the head of the organization, production may probably be closer to the 499 LaFerrari units.
