5 of the Best Self-Driving Cars That Have Been Introduced So Far

Article by Christian Andrei, on March 20, 2016

As part of Google X’s project to develop electric-running cars, they have also introduced one of the first autonomous or self-driving cars which they have not-so-ingeniously called the Google self-driving car.

Google and so many giants in the world of automotive are now on a race to develop some of the world’s best, if not first, self-driving or autonomous vehicles.

Road trips would be much more comfortable especially for the driver especially if everyone can just sit back, relax and enjoy a good movie while their good ol’ ride takes them to their destination.

Rinspeed XchangE

Rinspeed XchangE is an autonomous concept car based on Tesla’s Model S and is developed to be a pioneer in the comfort and entertainment department for autonomous cars.

The car has a 32-inch home cinema and is filled with display screens so that its passengers can sit back and relax while on a road trip. It also has a cabin that is designed for comfort and is also a space-saver. Road trips won’t be as exhausting once the Rinspeed XchangE comes to production.

BMW 6-Series

Car manufacturer BMW is also on the race to make one of the best autonomous cars. The German automotive magnate has been diligently developing autonomous cars in its research facilities and one of their creations is the self-driving BMW M235is.

It was showcased at the CES 2014 and it has displayed much promise as it easily manoeuvred through cones and had precise control on slipping and sliding around the track.

BMW is said to be targeting 2020 to finally build fully developed autonomous cars, so let’s keep our hopes up that it doesn’t end up like Google’s self-driving car.

Audi RS7 Sportback

Audi isn’t one to get behind the race to autonomy (pun intended) and it sure doesn’t want BMW to have all the fun. Audi has also released its first four-door self-driving vehicle, the RS7.

And it sure has potential as it winded and glided along the Ascari Track in Spain. The RS7 looks very promising for its kind as it handled the Spanish track like a pro while its “driver” and passengers sat back and relaxed. Way to go, Germany.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Even before autonomous cars made quite a stir in the automotive world, Mercedes was already in the works of producing one of their own. In late 2013, Mercedes-Benz produced one of its first autonomous vehicles.

Its self-driving S-Class was already quietly strutting its stuff for about 60 miles along Germany’s rural and urban roads.

What makes the self-driving S-class all the more promising is that nobody got hurt in the process of testing the vehicle. A special algorithm was designed to boost all of its sensors and cameras that aide the car to swerve through roads as smoothly and safely as possible.

Zoox

Just like the Rinspeed XchangE, the Zoox self-driving car is also a concept car and lives by the renderings created by its engineers. The Zoox looks a lot like it came out of a sci-fi move. There are no steering wheels and neither does it have a reverse gear. Zoox really is every sci-fi geek’s dream car.
