Cadillac ATS to make its official debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show

2013 Cadillac ATS

General Motors’ product chief Mary Barra said that the Cadillac ATS luxury compact will be unveiled at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show. This rear-drive sedan, which GM intends to launch in the second half of 2012, is included in the four production or concept vehicles that will have their worldwide debut during the Detroit show. Barra, who was at an Automotive Press Association event, didn't say what the other three models are.

She said that the ATS is a critical part of its Cadillac strategy, saying that it is one of the largest segments in the global luxury industry whether it’s from a volume or an importance perspective.

The ATS is expected to compete against the BMW 3 series and other well-established models in the compact luxury market like the Mercedes C class and the Audi A4. Barra said that German cars dominate the compact luxury segment but she believes that GM has come up with a “compelling and convincing new challenger." The GM plant in Lansing, Mich., will produce the ATS beside the CTS coupe, sedan and wagon.
