Cadillac Converj receives green light

GM astonished the crowd at the Detroit Auto Show last January with a concept coupe designated the Cadillac Converj. Sharing the same Voltec platform with the Chevrolet Volt, the Converj was perceived as GM's way to leverage the expensive ER-EV drivetrain in a car that could sell at a premium price to recover part of its development expenses. There are reports coming out that the Converj has a go signal for production in 2011, just a year after the launch of the Volt.
It was confirmed by Bob Kruse of GM during the Detroit event that the production model of the Converj will most probably utilize the same powertrain as the Volt, but will have varying calibrations to permit a bit higher performance level than the Volt. If the Converj pushes through, its measurements must undergo some changes for it to utilize the same under-structure as the Volt.
The biggest obstacle to building the Converj, however, is the lack of funds. If GM will not be given financial aid, it won't have enough cash to realize its plans for the new Converj coupe.
