Cadillac joins Lexus as the brand with the most-pleased customers

2010 Cadillac SRXThe latest American Customer Satisfaction Index puts Cadillac and Lexus equally matched with a score of 89. According to the annual study conducted by the University of Michigan, Detroit makes hold 3 of the top 5 posts for the most-pleased customers this year.

In 2008, Cadillac ranked second. This year, the industry-wide tally was 84, or 2.4% above last year’s and an all-time high for the index. Customer satisfaction for all Detroit brands grew from just over 81 last year to just below Asian automakers’ score of 84. European companies topped the ranking with 86. In 2000, Detroit brands clearly outscored Asian companies. This year marks the closest that the Asian cars have been to taking the crown from them. Claes Fornell, director of the University of Michigan’s national quality research center, said part of the Detroit 3’s increased satisfaction stems, oddly, from declining sales. He explains that as less-satisfied customers patronize another brand, the remaining customers are fewer but more satisfied. He added that this scenario is more sustainable than having a diversified mass of buyers.
