Cadillac responds to speculations on naming strategies for sedan lineup

Cadillac would name its next sedan as YTS and ZTS! This is all speculation but this could well be the case, considering that a Cadillac spokesman has confirmed that the first letter in each vehicle model is in ascending alphabetic order, based on its size and based on its size and place in the lineup. The current naming formula that Cadillac uses for calling its sedan lineup is the blank-T-S. With that, customers hoping for a new sedan model from Cadillac could expect the carmaker to dub new sedan models that are larger than the XTS as YTS and ZTS, alphabetically speaking.Cadillac just rolled out the XTS in June, with the smaller ATS in August. A redesigned CTS will follow suit late next year.

Who’s to say that Cadillac won’t name its long-awaited flagship sedan as the YTS! However, General Motors, Cadillac’s parent, could abandon its naming strategy and dub the next sedan with a creative name. Doing that would go against the alphanumeric naming trend that has become a practice in the luxury vehicle market. GM has in the past named a sedan without using its alphanumeric naming formula. That sedan was the 2005 Cadillac DeVille. But the name did not stick and GM renamed the DeVille as the DTS.

Cadillac’s current naming strategy allows GM to methodically position its sedan lineup to go face-to-face with rivals BMW, Audi and Mercedes which are also using the alphanumeric formula for their lineups. While Cadillac has yet to choose a name for its upcoming range-topping flagship sedan, its rivals already have: BMW 7 series, Audi A8 and Mercedes-Benz S class. As for Cadillac? Well, luxury customers and the interested public will find out sooner or later. [source: Automotive News Sub - sub. required]
