Cadillac is making its third attempt in 15 years to jumpstart sales in Europe’s premium car market by offering two new models and a fresh styling direction. However, a diesel variant remains a remote possibility. GM chief executive Dan Akerson said that the “only thing” that they can do with the Cadillac in Europe is to “try, try and try again.” At the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the XTS saloon concept from Detroit 2010 was unveiled. It gives hints of Cadillac’s new, softer styling direction that is meant to appeal to European buyers.
Akerson said the XTS would be slotted between the 5-series-size CTS and a new, smaller saloon to create a more credible European range. However, key powertrains such as a longitudinally mounted four-cylinder diesel still don’t have a place in the future product pipeline says Autocar.
Jeff Lux, Opel Vauxhall’s powertrain boss, said that Cadillac isn’t capable of doing everything simultaneously. Akerson also acknowledged that it will be “very tough’ for Cadillac to become successful due to the competition it faces from Europe’s premium marques.
