Cadillac Volt could make its debut to the 2009 Detroit Auto Show

Talks of a Cadillac branded Volt have been going around early this year, with Bob Lutz and other GM bosses intimating at the likelihood of fresh hybrid version entering the Cadillac range. Lutz informed reporters last September that "there's definitely room" for an eco-focused Cadillac and also that "there's going to have to be some kind of dramatic environmental statement" from GM's luxury marquee.

The form that it could get is anybody's guess. Opel and Vauxhall variants of the Volt are already intended, but a Cadillac version would probably be a small- to mid-size crossover. Just such a vehicle is lined-up to emerge in the second quarter of next year, the next generation SRX, motivated by the Provoq concept revealed early this year.

Although the Volt is believed to bring a sticker price of about $40,000, the range-extended, plug-in hybrid CUV from Cadillac would be priced considerably steeper, and that could help GM recover some of the outlay connected with the Volt's sophisticated drivetrain design. In a few weeks this will become more certain.
