Car sales Germany fell in January for the second month in a row

2010 Mercedes-Benz C-ClassWhile most major European markets are thriving due to government incentives, new-car registrations in Germany dropped in January for the second month in a row. According to the VDIK foreign carmakers association, only 181,500 vehicle registrations were recorded in January 2010, the weakest monthly total since German unification in 1990. This figure represents a 4.2% drop compared to January 2009. The drop came even though sales had fell 14% in the year-earlier month. This extended the fall of 5% in December, the first year-on-year decline in 11 months. Since a 5 billion euro ($6.96 billion) government vehicle scrapping scheme ran out of funds at the start of September, the demand in Germany has fallen rather sharply. The declining orders are evident in the new car registration statistics. Some analysts predict that the same trend will be seen this year across Europe. [via autonews - sub. required]
