Car sales in Russia fell 46% year-on-year in November
In November, car sales in Russia dropped by 46% year-on-year to 105,302 units however, this is an improvement over the 52% slide reported for October, according to data from the Association of European Businesses. In addition, the AEB data also illustrates that the drop in demand cut sales by 50 percent in January-November 2009.
The chairman of the AEB’s auto manufacturer’s committee, David Thomas, is urging the Russian government to inform the public on what its plans are to support the auto industry. Thomas added that it is now vital that there’s clarity on all the details of government support for the industry and that “this support is applied to all brands sold in Russia.” Last November, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said that he will introduce a car-scrappage scheme, under which the state would pay 50,000 roubles ($1,733) to car owners who trade in vehicles older than 10 years for new Russian-made models.
