The name change is being done in honor of the 45th anniversary of two of the company‚ most famous cars -- the 427 Cobra and the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350. The company claims that it has only responded to the clamor of the other fans to return the name for years. In a statement, Carol Shelby said that enthusiasts have asked the company to return the Shelby American name. Continued after the jump!
Shelby said further that although he is proud of the cars that were built from the business that had been known, it is merely fulfilling that wish for fans throughout the globe. The Shelby American name is expected to better connect its current vehicles to its heritage of building great cars such as the GT350 and Cobra.
In 1962, Carroll Shelby founded the company to make sports cars after his own racing career. He won at the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans but his career was cut short due to a heart problem. In the 1960s, the carmaker found fame with its 289 and 427 Cobras, and a group of custom Mustangs.
Shelby was tasked to lead the team of racers that beat Ferrari in the historic 1966 and 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans. Shelby American, a division of Carroll Shelby International Inc., said that the modern version of Shelby Auto was formed in Dec. 2003.
