Geiger GTS based on Corvette ZR1

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Geiger GTS Corvette ZR1Geiger Cars has created a 700bhp supercar based on the Corvette ZR1 – the Geiger GTS. It may use the same 6.2-liter V8 engine as the ZR1, but the tuning specialists at Geiger Cars have modified it to produce 677lb ft of torque and 700bhp. Peak power comes at 6,600rpm and peak torque at 4200rpm.

The GTS can go from 0 to 62mph in 3.6 seconds and can reach a top speed of 213mph. Geiger has also been tuning the car’s new electronically controlled magnetic suspension system at the Nurburgring. The styling of the ZR1 was revised by adding a new wider front air vent, LED front fog lights, LED rear lights and a larger rear diffuser. Its new pearl varnish makes it appear as if it has changed color when viewed from different angles. It rides on 19-inch black alloy wheels at the front and 20-inch alloys at the rear. No pricing has been announced. Photo gallery after the jump!

Corvette will survive, says General Motors regarding the new regulations

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

2010 Chevrolet Corvette Grand SportAs the federal government ratchets up fuel economy standards, General Motors Co. says it will do whatever it takes to keep the Chevrolet Corvette — even a hybrid powertrain.”We will only do a hybrid if that is what is required to maintain the vehicle,” says Tom Stephens, GM’s vice chairman of global product development.

“I think we have a pretty good plan right now that probably will not require a hybrid in the near term.”New regulations require a company average of 35.5 mpg in the 2016 model year. To boost fuel economy, GM plans to reduce the Corvette’s weight, offer tires with less rolling resistance and offer an engine with direct injection, variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation. Electric power steering alone could add about 0.5 mpg.The base 2010 Corvette coupe has a 430-hp, 6.2-liter V-8 that gets 16 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. As for a smaller engine, Stephens says, “I don’t believe that we need to do a six-cylinder engine in a Corvette at this time.

Split-window design to return on the next Corvette

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Chevrolet Stingray ConceptThe C7, a.k.a the next Corvette, will have a split rear window as on the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray, according to Ed Welburn, General Motors’ head of global design.

Welburn, acknowledged to be the father of the re-born Camaro, confirmed that the next Vette would follow the 2010 Camaro down the road of retro-inflected styling. If you looked at the second Transformers movie closely, there was a Corvette Stingray concept shown that hinted at the design. Welburn said that the split-window is something that he expects for the next Corvette. He explains that visibility isn’t now much of a problem due to the back-up cameras and blind-spot detection systems that are available. Continued after the jump!

Corvette C7 making it debut in 2013

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Chevrolet Corvette CentennialThe smaller, lighter, and more advanced 2013 model C7 Corvette will begin production in April 2012. To whet our appetite, General Motors revealed a few details of what to expect. Foremost on the list would be the fact that the C7 would retain a front-engine layout instead of the mid-engine setup rumored previously.

It is likely that styling would be influenced by the Stingray Concept featured in the latest Transformers movie and introduced at the Chicago Auto Show. When the 426hp Camaro SS (priced at $30,245) arrived, the 430hp base Corvette (priced at $48,565) lost a bit of its glitter and was perceived to be obsolete. To rectify the matter, GM set into motion the preparation for the 2013 model that would produce at least 450hp. We’ll be on the lookout for prototypes in the next several months and we’ll make sure to keep you updated.
