Fiat and Chrysler planning an electric version of the 500

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

2009 Fiat 500ENVI, a special team within Chrysler dedicated to electric drive vehicles, has been displaying electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles at various auto shows the past couple of years but it has yet to launch an eco-friendly car into the market. We’ve received news reports that production of such a car from ENVI may be nearing.

Fiat is said to be looking to build an electric version of its retro-chic 500, and Chrysler may be in charge of developing the EV powertrain. An Autocar report quotes Chrysler board member Alfredo Altavilla to have said that the project is “going very well.” He added that the electric powertrain would come from Chrysler’s R&D groups. Since the 500 will be sold in America through Chrysler dealers, many have concluded that the little Fiat would be an ideal first vehicle, which will directly compete against the electric Mini E. If ever the Chrysler-powered 500 does get created, it wouldn’t be the first. A British firm had already beaten it by unveiling an EV variant as a concept for the 2008 British motor show.

Future design of Fiat cars inspired by the popular 500

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Fiat 500The Fiat 500 has been getting tons of attention due to its look and this translates to plenty of sales too. Most of these buyers are new to the brand, making it all the more impressive.

That’s precisely why there will be more Fiats bearing that more rounded design. The mainstay of Fiat sales, the next-generation Punto supermini, is believed to be the first model to wear the new look. Expect to see it around 2011. Also garnering plenty of praise is Fiat’s styling for the Grande Punto and the Bravo. Still, you can’t please everybody. Because of sportier styling flaunted by the current models, many female buyers were turned off. Continued after the jump!

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Fiat 500 Tributo FerrariFerrari and Abarth have come together to create the smallest hot hatch ever — the ultimate limited-edition version of the Fiat 500. There’s no doubt that the car named the 695 Tributo Ferrari will make Italian supercar history. The car carries the Maranello firm’s traditional Scuderia Red paint job while inside, there are black leather seats with carbon fiber shells.

The hide-trimmed steering wheel features red inserts to match the exterior. Upgrades aren’t limited to aesthetics though since the 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol engine has been modified to develop more than 180bhp. There’s a race-derived six-speed paddleshift gearchange. To cope with the extra power, Ferrari has upgraded the suspension. Bright red Brembo brakes have been added to boost stopping power. Clearly getting inspiration from the old Ferraris are the unique 17-inch alloys. No pricing announcements have been made.
