Preview: 2011 Porsche 911

Monday, November 9th, 2009

2011 Porsche 911According to the latest reports from the German magazine Autobild, it seems that Porsche is currently working on a new 911. The new car will not be just a number change, like the 996 and 997! It appears that we will see a brand new vehicle vehicle that will make its official debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Autobild says that the new model will not bring Targa, Turbo Cabrio, GT2 or Speedster versions although there are chances to see them if the German manufacturer will receive many requests for these type of cars. Regarding the design of the new car, this will show radically different proportions: the front of the car will be shorter while the rear will be extended with 100 mm, but don’t expect too much, because Porsche still wants to keep the legendary shape. In the first two years we will see just Carrera 2/4 and Carrera 2S/4S versions which will carry the following engines: the standard version will be powered by a 3.4-liter boxer engine capable to deliver 350 hp and a maximum torque of 350 Nm while the S version will carry a 3.8-liter engine which will deliver 400 hp and around 440 Nm of torque. More details to be revealed!

Porsche will share Panamera and 911 platforms with other Volkswagen brands

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Porsche Panamera 4SIn a recent interview with Autocar, new boss Michael Macht admitted that Porsche is prepared to share the Panamera and 911 platforms with other brands from the Volkswagen Group. “Porsche needs to become a strong pillar of VW, as well as having its own production and research and development capabilities. It is important to
use synergies as well as having independence,” said Macht.

Apart from the Cayenne’s V6, Porsche will not use other engines from Vw because the engine development is a core value for the German manufacturer, according to Macht sayings. As you may know already Porsche is also thinking of its first electric car, but this is currently far away because it appears that the current rechnology doesn’t fit with Porsche requirements. The technology used by the Audi e-Tron Concept could be the solution. Anyway, it appears that when the technology will be available, the Panamera could become thr first Porsche platform to go electric!

Official: Porsche working on an electric 911

Monday, September 21st, 2009

2010 Porsche 911 Carrera4 CabrioAll we know for sure is that Porsche will make an electric sports car but the carmaker has not confirmed whether a rumor that it will be version of the 911 is true. At the Frankfurt Motor Show, Porsche’s new president and CEO, Michael Macht, did not reveal which model it would be. Macht said however, that the electric sports car has to meet the high performance standards of the Porsche brand.

Given the impressive statistics of the SLS eDrive, an electric Porsche should accomplish that. Macht also said that the company is aiming for its electric vehicle to offer a range similar to that of current sports cars. Currently, battery technology doesn’t yet meet Porsche’s strict requirements but that its engineers are already working hard on this challenge. Macht said that within a few years from today, Porsche will take the first step to build an electric car by introducing a Cayenne and Panamera hybrid. If you remember, it was Ferdinand Porsche who built the first fully functioning hybrid car 109 years ago. Macht was unable to give a production date but he didn’t rule out the possibility of a 911 hybrid as a stopgap solution.

Porsche 911 Sport Classic: Photo update

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

Porsche 911 Sport ClassicThis is Porsche’s limited edition 911 Sport Classic, a car that’s said to steal heavily from the iconic rear-engined sports car. Only 250 units of this car will be built. It is fitted with a ‘ducktail’ spoiler made famous by the 1973 Carrera RS 2.7 and ‘Fuchs-style’ custom-made alloy wheels from the same era.

It also has a ‘double bubble’ roof that echoes both classic racing cars and the recent Carrera GT supercar. To improve aerodynamics, a new front spoiler was installed to help balance with the rear wing. The bi-xenon headlamps with black surrounds are reminiscent of the famous Porsche racing cars such as the 911 Turbo RSR from 1974. Due to a new intake, an engine management system, and modified cylinder heads, the 3.8-liter engine in the Sport Classic is boosted to 402bhp. The car also boasts of the new, variable-resonance intake system, featuring six vacuum-controlled flaps, which allows the engine to switch a more power-oriented and a more torque-oriented geometry. Rumor: Porsche 911 Hybrid in the works

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Porsche 911 Carrera 4To those who thought Porsche 911 could never have a hybrid or all-electric version, think again. Porsche’s Wolfgang Durheimer has toyed with the idea and never actually ruled it out but still there are no confirmed plans of production. These latest spy shots reveal that the Porsche 911 prototype is sporting a suspicious bulge on the front hood.

On this bulge is an electric flash sticker that could just be the confirmation we’ve all been waiting for. In place of the Porsche badge is a Batman symbol. According to photographers on this shoot, the prototype was running very quietly for a 911. Hybrid versions to the Cayenne and the Panamera are coming up soon so it’s not a huge leap for our imagination that the 911 model will be transforming too. With new limits to CO2 and fuel-economy regulations around the globe, the Porsche 911 all-electric model isn’t so unusual after all.
