Porsche detunes Boxster and Cayman to make them cheaper in Norway

Friday, October 30th, 2009

2010 Porsche Boxster SWhat you will hear know is quite stupid… or at least this is what we think! Autozentrum Sport AS is offering a detuned version of the 2010 Porsche Boxster and Cayman, specially adapted for the Norwegian market.

The new edition of the Boxster has now 211 hp instead of 255 hp which provides savings of 87,000 krones ($15,200) while the Cayman features the same 211 hp from 265 and this means it cheaper with almost 106,000 krones ($18,600). Although the amount of power that is lost is quite big, the performances don’t look too bad: the Boxster can still sprint to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds (if you choose the PDK gearbox the acceleration is with 0.1 seconds quicker). Also the torque is unchanged: 290 Nm for the Boxster and 300 Nm for the Cayman while the top speed is 263 km/h and 265 km/h, respectively.

2010 Porsche CaymanAccording to the latest reports, Porsche offers an optional dual-clutch transmission for its updated Cayman, manufactured by ZF Friedrichshafen AG which apparently improves the fuel economy with up to 10 percent to 31mpg (7.6 liters per 100km) compared with the earlier versions of the car equipped with the Tiptronic S automatic transmission.

The seven-speed gearbox is also a better choice for the Cayman S, showing a 15% increase or 30.1mpg (7.8 liters per 100km). The new ZF dual-clutch transmission also prevents power loss and speeds up the gear-change process by 60 percent. Continued after the jump!

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

2009 Porsche Cayman Boxster Techart GT RoadsterNew individualization options are available for the latest Boxster and Cayman models released by Porsche. Specialists at Porsche premium tuner TECHART outdid themselves with the new TECHART program that features two Aerokits, daytime running lights, a set of sport springs, as well as carbon interior packages.

For maximum optimization on their drag coefficients, both of the TECHART Aerokits I+II are PU-RIM made and wind tunnel tested. Essential Aerokit components include front spoiler with a spoiler lip that matches the body’s color, side sills, and a rear area that has been optimized in terms of both design and aerodynamics. The rigid rear spoiler and the rear apron with a diffuser look allows for greater stability at extreme speeds. Both models exhaust systems add a sporty touch to the striking rear design. The two round TECHART exhaust tailpipes in glossy or black chrome handle the rear exhaust flow in the best way. Both TECHART’s, the Boxster-based Roadster design and the Cayman-based TECHART GT design, feature new multifunctional daytime running lights system that is elegantly integrated into the upper part of the front spoiler. Porsche Cayman Shooting Brake: just a fake!

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Porsche Cayman Shooting BrakeRemember that viral video that showed the Porsche Cayman Shooting Brake? It had many fooled but it had recently been confirmed that it was a fake and was a practical joke perpetrated by the former editor of TopGear America, Jared Holstein.

He admitted that along with several interns at the site, he orchestrated the whole thing. To create the image used in the fake video, intern Matt DuVall used a 3D animation program called Maya. The clip hinted at a European setting but it had actually been shot in Brooklyn. They planted the video on a Czech video-game website in order to obscure its origins. It was so convincing that it got picked up by many prominent automotive sites. In an interview, Holstein explained that he only did it because “[i]t’s never been done before. We love wagons. And we wanted to see what we could accomplish with a high degree of sophistication, but with only a conservative effort.”

Porsche Cayman Shooting Brake revealed… sort of!

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

Porsche Cayman Shooting BrakeRumors of a Posche Cayman Shooting Brake model have been neither confirmed nor denied. In the meantime, we have to settle for speculations, of which there are many. Take for instance this image of a car posted at Flickr by a mysterious user, who could be faking or could be a Porsche insider.

Take your guess. In any case, a screen shot of the car has appeared on the upcoming XBox 360 racing game Forza Motorsport 3. Only last month, there was a Porsche mule spied and thought to be this elusive Shooting Brake. The latest image appears to have been taken during a studio photo shoot. What seems to be a man adjusting a light is seen on the other side of the car, presumably working on the instructions of the photographer who has our view of the car. There seems to be no B-pillar, thus suggesting a concept rather than a finished product. It’s possible that this could be an expert Photoshop job. One way or the other, the answer will come at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Porsche Cayman Clubsport: first details revealed

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Porsche CaymanOur sources reported that Porsche is prepping up a lightweight Cayman Clubsport which will be on sale in the UK this coming October. This is the first time that Porsche is offering a hardcore variant of the Cayman, which will be able to come up to the demands of track competitions. It is foreseen that Porsche is going to use the prepped up Cayman to establish a new one-make race range.

The Porsche Cayman Clubsport comes with a weight-reduction package that includes a stripped down interior, body panels of lightweight material, simplified lighting configurations and forged alloys that removed about 100 kilograms of weight. Power under the hood is expected to be the latest 320 hp 3.4-liter flat six, currently with direct injection, derived from the Porsche Cayman S. Featured as standard are a 6-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential. Performance will be a notch better than the Cayman S’s 171 mph (275 km/h) and acceleration from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) at 4.9 seconds due to its lower curb weight. Further modifications consist of a special body package that comes with deeper front and rear bumpers and a fixed rear spoiler to substitute the retractable unit utilized in the standard Cayman. Available to customers are either standard trim or race specific Clubsport. The race spec Clubsport comes with an additional 6-point harness, roll cage and fire extinguisher. Although prices have not yet to been established a $5,400 (€4,250) premium over the $60,000 (€46,700) Cayman S is a possibility.

2009 Porsche Boxster and Cayman U.S. pricing announced

Friday, January 16th, 2009

2010 Porsche Cayman Boxster FaceliftBeginning this March the brand new 2009 Porsche Boxster and Cayman will arrive in the US with the latest technology, increased potency, and an increased pricing compared to the retiring model. The Boxster will begin with $46,000 and the Boxster S with $56,700, while the Cayman begins at $50,300 and the Cayman S at $60,200.

These new models receive a price increase representing 1.8 percent in contrast to the retiring 2008 versions but you get more with these new Porsches like the new Direct Fuel Injection technology that improves power yield in both models. The standard 2.9-liter flat-six will boost power yield for the Boxter by 255 hp and the Cayman with 265 hp, while the S-level 3.4-liter powerplant will now generate 310 hp in the convertible and 320 hp for its fixed roof brother. A 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission is also currently available which comes with manual paddle shifters minus the clutch. Although these powertrains boost power yields for Porsche models they likewise enhance fuel economy with recorded combined estimates in excess of 25 mpg.
