Scion has no plans for a hybrid model

Friday, February 5th, 2010

2010 Scion xBToyota has no immediate plans to offer a hybrid system in its Scion line of vehicles. The focus would continue to be on making vehicles that are priced lower than $20,000.

Scion vice president Jack Hollis told Wards Auto that the youth brand may still consider hybrid powertrains for future models, but that the added cost of today’s hybrid systems won’t be aligned with Scion’s value image. Hollis said that the company believes that from a pricing structure, hybrids fit into the Toyota lineup better than the Scion lineup. There has been speculation that the Toyota FT-Ch would arrive in Scion showrooms, but Hollis denied this. He said that Scion would want to have a totally differentiating hybrid, something that it has yet to create. Scion is still considering all-wheel drive models. Hollis did not say when Scion’s first AWD model might appear. He disclosed that the offering would use an AWD system from partner Subaru. Hollis seems to hinting at the possibility of the Toyota FT-86 concept arriving in showrooms as the next Scion tC. An all-new Scion tC is set to arrive by the end of this year.

Scion is still interested in building a compact pickup truck

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

2010 Scion xBScion isn’t known for being innovative but this year, it will be introducing two new vehicles for the US market. The Toyota-owned Scion is a brand that depends on the same old models, which receive minor revisions each year.

At the 2010 North American International Auto Show, Toyota’s president of the North American division confirmed the new models that will be coming out however, the details are hazy. There are rumors that one of the new Scions will be based on the iQ concept revealed some time ago. The second model will likely be a compact pickup truck based on the A-BAT concept displayed by Toyota at the 2008 NAIAS. Scion’s representatives would only say that it is a possibility. Jack Hollis, Scion’s General Manager, who speaks in behalf of PickupTrucks.com, said that a pickup truck sold under the Scion badge is a possible scenario for the future. No timeframe has been revealed on when the model will be available but Toyota North America’s president hints that the compact pickup truck would arrive before the year ends.

Scion’s future lineup likely to have a stronger U.S. influence

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Scion iQ ConceptScion plans to introduce two new products that would likely have a stronger US influence. Currently, only one of Scion’s three US vehicles was designed and engineered in the US. Yoshi Inaba, president of Toyota Motor North America Inc., said that since Scion is “pretty much” a North American brand, he believes that it’s “very natural” to think that more development, more design work, should be done in North America. In an interview last Tuesday at the Detroit Auto Show, Inaba said that Toyota recognizes the importance of Scion. He also said that the Scion should be more locally developed and that “influenced is a better word.” Last summer, Inaba had returned as president of Toyota Motor North America after running Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. from 1999 to 2003. He had retired from back in 2007 but had been brought back as part of the management team installed by Toyota Motor Corp.’s new CEO, Akio Toyoda, to revive the company.

Scion xB Tuner by Peter Colell breaks cover at SEMA

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

ScionScion has given three of the most innovative and creative visionaries the opportunity to showcase their talents through three project vehicles shown at the SEMA Auto Show. The xB Tuner Challenge was participated in by Peter Colello of Mummbles Marketing, Bowls LA, and Eneri Abillar, who is working with Leigh Guarnieri from BRS Autodesign.

The year 2002 was significant for Peter Colello who established his name that year with his work on the Toyota Celica GT 2002 and a 2001 Ford Focus ZTS. At the xB Tuner Challenge, Colello sought to build a well-rounded show car with pure functionality, building and expanding from past projects. Colello added elements such as a wide-body kit, lots of carbon-fiber in the hood, hatch, wing and custom roof, and a color motif of teal. In addition, the car has a turbo kit, air-ride suspension, and TRD exhaust. Of course, Colello put in one of his signatures – an over-the-top in-car entertainment system.
