South Korean court approves Ssangyong’s revival plan

Friday, December 18th, 2009

SsangYong Sports Sedan ConceptLiquidation is now certain to be avoided as a South Korean court has approved Ssangyong’s revival plan. Ssangyong has been in court-approved bankruptcy protection since February.

For the past year, the future of the company had been unsure as it made attempts to seek new investment and consolidate its debts. Several months ago, the workers rioted for 77 days over redundancy plans. This led to the delay of its new C200 crossover, which is set to be revealed at the Frankfurt motor show in September. With the court’s approval of Ssangyong’s recovery plan, the company will be implementing a three-year program designed to increase competitiveness, return to profitability and triple its revenues year on year. The company is also seeking new investment and finance to aid in funding the C200. Paul Williams, managing director of SsangYong distributor Koelliker UK, said that with this court decision, SsangYong gains a lifeline allowing its officials to start planning properly for 2010. One of those plans include the launching of the new C200 compact car.

Ssangyong factory occupied by redundant workers

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

SsangYong RextonProduction losses at the Ssangyong factory in south Korea have amounted to £110 million, the value of about 10,800 cars, because around 800 redundant workers insist on living in the factory and have not left in two months.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency had been tasked to assist a court officer to deliver a document from the court demanding them to leave the Pyeongtaek plant. However, the police failed in this task. Union spokesman Lee Chang Kun told the Bloomberg news agency that the workers will resist “in the face of death” if the police attempts to force them out. Ssangyong was placed under control last February after encountering a “serious” cash shortage. Last month, the company’s restructuring plan was approved but as a result, more than a third of the workforce was made redundant.

However, as I have said hundreds of times before; we can do absolutely anything to any car and many people may have been under the impression that we would not have been able to do anything with the Rexton. I believe we have delivered an outstanding product that proves there we know exactly what we are doing and can add our touch to any car.
