Caterham Cars India is set to be launched during the inaugural Indian Grand Prix this weekend. This is part of Caterham Cars’ worldwide expansion into new markets. The brand will be presented to the market in India together with the arrival of the most famous global motorsport in the country. The brand is supported by brothers Gaurav and Mohit Burman, who will manage this Indian operation. You may have heard of this Burman family. They run the Dabur Group, a leading consumer healthcare and food products company in India. The brothers, who are racing enthusiasts, are planning racing and trackday activities that will be carried out by the Caterham India team.
British sportscar racer, Matt Cummings, a renowned automotive and motorsport operator in the industry, will be handling operations. Cummings said that he looks forward to showing off the “exhilarating driving experience of a Seven” whether on the road or on the circuit to the market. He said that an entirely Indian-built Seven is part of the plan.
This means that this Caterham model would be the only road, race and track car built in India. It has also been announced that Caterham’s CDX driving experience and grassroots motorsport series, the Caterham Academy, will start operations in India in 2012. According to Caterham Cars chief executive, Ansar Ali, the brand arrives in India “just as the brand new Indian GP signals the arrival of Indian motorsport on the world stage.“ He said that the Caterham brand sees “enormous” potential in the Indian market.
