Caterham to ramp up capacity at its Dartford factory

After seeing the growing sales of its lightweight two-seater sportscar, Caterham Cars plans to raise the capacity at its Dartford factory. The increased capacity serves the purpose of meeting the demand for the Seven as well as cutting short the 3-4 month waiting list. In the past year, Caterham has had consistently high sales in the UK and in the overseas market. At the Tokyo Motor Show last November, the British marque was one of only three European brands. Ansar Ali, Managing Director of Caterham Cars, said that the company has achieved an extremely positive sales period despite the economic downturn.
He said that adding to the capacity merely underlines [its] position in the market. The most popular models in the UK remain to be the Roadsport 175 and the Superlight R300 -- ahead of the entry-level Ford Sigma-powered Roadsport 125. Caterham's top-of-the-line Superlight R500 can reach 60mph in under 2.9 seconds, a feat that has led to sales of about 100 units worldwide since it was launched in March 2008.
This is a figure that its predecessor actually took five years to achieve. Ali said that the export market was boosted by the exchange rate but he pointed out that what has fueled its success even further were the European Type Approval last year and the launch of the Ford Duratec powered Roadsport 175.
