Caterham to reveal its plans to go electric within six months

Caterham is looking into the possibility of building electric vehicles and is set to make a decision within six months, company boss Ansar Ali revealed during an interview with Autocar. At last year's Tokyo Motor Show, Ali said that talks were ongoing with several potential partners who are interested to work with the company. He said that they aim to do it properly with the right partners, and not just stick batteries in the back of a Seven. Ali said that it's currently still at a very early stage but at this point, one thing's for sure that it won't be a volume product.
The plan is initially for a racing car rather than a road-gong Seven. Ali said that they're currently looking at motorsport applications but they're concerned if an electric car would be able to handle race conditions and if there is technology to support it.
Caterham has yet to be fully convinced that electric technology could work in its vehicles but Ali says that the shift will be inevitable if legislation penalizes manufacturers for having high emissions across its range. Ali added that he senses that the move towards electric technology won't go away as the volume manufacturers have embraced it.
