General Motors Co. said that it is cooperating with the federal investigation of its Chevrolet Cobalt compact car over complaints of a sudden loss of power steering. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that it has received 1,132 consumer complaints. Many of these complaints claim that the loss of steering "resulted in difficulty controlling the vehicle, such as departing from the desired travel lane." The NHTSA investigation, which started on Jan. 27, covers 2005-09 Cobalts and 2008-09 Cobalt SS models. About 905,000 vehicles could be involved. The U.S. Transportation Department unit said that 11 crashes and one injury have been reported, with no deaths. Most of the complaints were made within the past six months.
