Chevrolet to build a LS9 6.2L V8 supercharged engine at the 2010 SEMA Show

At the 2010 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, General Motors Co. will be showing the visitors how to build the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 by hand. GM will be sending its porting engine technicians, tools, and parts to Las Vegas to its display at the SEMA show to give a presentation of what consumers have to pay $5800 to get. Employees from GM's Performance Build Center in Wixom, Michigan, will assemble an LS9 from the ground up. Visitors will get the chance to ask the experts specific questions about the engine and its assembly process. These are certainly vital information to those who intend to build race cars or planning a street rod.
This booth will display the Performance Build Center as well as GM's new Corvette Engine Build Experience program. GM will also give buyers the opportunity to participate in the assembly of their own car. For a fee, they can choose to help in the manufacture of either the 7.0-liter, LS7 V-8 for their Corvette Z06, or the supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 for their ZR1.
Owners can go to the PBC, build the engines under the supervision of GM’s engine experts, and sign off on the engine once assembly is complete. The LS9s are hand-built but the technicians at the PBC make use of several tools such as bespoke hoists and automatic bolt drivers to improve precision. It has yet to be confirmed if these machines would be seen at Las Vegas, considering the cost and bulk of the equipment. If everything goes smoothly, there will be a finished engine at the end of the show on November 5.
