GM is currently building the biggest automotive facility in Michigan, where the battery packs of the latest Chevrolet Volt will be manufactured, with an area of 31,000 sq. ft. The car company is going to utilize this facility to design and new energy storage technologies including the testing and development of lithium-ion technologies. This is part of GM's attempt to boost capacity and resources in the production of eco-friendly and fuel-efficient vehicles to change its previous "gas-guzzling" image.
Besides this ongoing construction, GM has also struck several collaborative agreements with LG Chem, the maker of the lithium-ion cell for the 2011 Volt, A123Systems, Hitachi, Ltd., Cobasys, and Compact Power.
Hundreds of engineers are expected to be added to GM's global hybrid, EV, and advanced battery staff to do research on location. Also included in the plans is a collaborative work with the University of Michigan in the setting up of an advanced battery lab to be located in Ann Arbor, Michigan as well as talks concerning new curriculum for a new course in battery engineering.
