As you may know already, Hyundai introduced the 2012 Veloster in January at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show and promised us a rally car based on this vehicle. Well, the 2012 Hyundai Veloster rally car made its debut today at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show. The new car is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, upgraded by a HKS ball bearing turbocharger and capable to deliver an impressive 500 hp and 600 lb.-ft. of torque.
The enginee is mated to an X-Trac six-speed sequential transmission. In order to put all the amount of power to the road, the vehicle uses custom built 18-inch HRE wheels and 245/40-18 Hankook Racing tires, as well as a new braking system consisting of 14-inch Alcon brake rotors and six piston Alcon calipers.
The RMR Red Bull Hyundai Veloster rally car also uses a custom suspension in order to support the jumps rallycross cars have to make. The interior is quite simple and don’t expect to see the same design as in the production version.
All comfort and convenience features are removed and replaced by a custom-fabricated eight-point safety cage and firewall. The safety cage is required for rallying and a Sparco racing seat further protects the driver in the overhauled cockpit.
World Champion driver Rhys “Mad Skills” Millen will be participating in races driving Hyundai vehicles. For the Formula DRIFT Championship, he will be piloting the RMR Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe.
Meanwhile, in the U.S. Rallycross Championship Series, Millen will be using the RMR Red Bull Hyundai Veloster rally car. He will also be using the Veloster for the Summer X Games. The brand believes that Millen and his racing team are a perfect fit in their bid to enter motorsports.
Millen’s driving qualifications include being in movie stunts as well as various drifting championships. He managed to set a new world record at Pikes Peak and is also known for the truck flip during the Red Bull: New Year No Limits held at Las Vegas during the 2008 New Year's Eve celebration.
While Millen has indeed been successful as a driver, helping him achieve this is a team of fabricators and engineers that know how to achieve a race car’s full potential. Millen and his team will attempt to have a new world record during Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
He will be using the Hyundai PM580 equipped with the Lambda turbocharged V-6 engine. Millen has been racing for more than 17 years and in that span of time, he has proven that he is indeed one of North America’s leading rally driver/drifting drivers.
His father is the famous rally and off-road racer, Rod Millen. His achievements include winning the Formula Drift championship back in 2005 as well as the 2008 Red Bull Drifting World Championship. It was in 2009 when he participated in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb that Millen used a carbon-bodied Hyundai Genesis Coupe and won the Time Attack 2WD class setting a new class record with 12:09.397.
Australian Robbie “Maddo” Maddison meanwhile is known to be a freestyle motocross rider. Like Millen, he also set a new record as part of the “Red Bull: New Year. No Limits.” in 2007. That record being the longest motorcycle jump at 322 feet.
It did not stop there as in 2008, he recorded strong finishes during the Red Bull X-Fighters series and the AST Dew Tour. Also during the 2008 New Year’s Eve celebration, he jumped 96 feet into the air above the Arc de Triomphe at Paris at Las Vegas.
As if that was not amazing enough, he then went down from the monument, which was more than 80 feet, to a ramp just below. By 2010, Maddison once again set a record by being the first person to jump the Formula One’s start gantry during the Melbourne, Australia race.
A month later, he successfully jumped above the Corinth Canal in Greece and became the first rider to cross it. Just last summer, Maddison was awarded the silver medal for MotoX Best Trick during the X Games 16.
