2017 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE performance package is back with more power than ever before

Article by Andrew Christian, on February 17, 2016

Equipped with a more powerful engine as well as a more aggressively-tuned suspension system, Chevrolet announced the return of its Camaro 1LE performance package for 2017 which the company touts as capable of breaking previous records in track performance.

These 2017 offerings are available in two unique 1LE packages for both V6 and V8 models which are easily recognizable with their satin black hood and specific wheels to answer demands from customers. The package boasts of overall improvements in both handling and track performance as they are enhanced versions of the previous generation 1LE.

Notably, it will be the first time for the 1LE package to be available for the Camaro 1LT or 2LT coupes and they will now have the more powerful 3.6L V6 engine. The LT 1LE also features a more performance-tuned suspension, Goodyear Eagle F1 tires and Brembo brakes, which give the new model an impressive cornering grip of 0.97G as the driver is firmly but comfortably steadied by the installed Recaro seats while performing high G maneuvers.

Sharing and reviewing your track data are easily done as the unit comes equipped with a Performance Data Recorder. Magnetic ride control, new FE4 suspension tuning and a new, segment-exclusive electronic limited slip differential (eLSD) comprise the new 1LE package for Camaro 1SS models.

Further enhancing the models performance on track are massive Goodyear Eagle F1 tires which allow for more than 1G lateral acceleration. Completing the 1LE package are the Recaro seats and Performance Data Recorder (PDR) -- a new feature to the Camaro models.

Overall, the 1LE package is set to top an already impressive performance for Camaro which earned it the 2016 Motor Trend Car of the Year and Car and Driver 10 Best awards. Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser said that track-day racing fans will certainly give the Camaro 1LE packages a nod of approval.

The package offers the perfect combination of a lightweight but stiff structure, a stiffened suspension and damping, tires specifically made for the track, higher downforce, powerful brakes and more cooling. According to Oppenheiser, developmental tests made on the V-6 Camaro 1LE indicate that it is now comparable to the previous generation V-8 model in terms of lap time performance.

On the other hand the 2016 Camaro SS 1LE was clocked to finish three seconds faster than the standard Camaro SS, setting a new record for that segment. Truly, the 1LE packages achieved enhanced performance in all aspects and across all models.

Availability for the new 1LE performance packages for the 2017 Camaro SS and manual transmission LT V-6 coupe is slated to begin in late 2016. However, pricing and performance data have yet to be announced.

For its price range, the Camaro LT 1LE is the most capable sports coupe in track performance which can be deduced from its features: 3.6 L V-6 engine capable of delivering 335 HP, comes with a six-speed manual transmission; FE3 suspension components such as stabilizer bars, dampers, rear cradle mounts and ball-jointed rear toe links; 20-inch lightweight wheels made from forge aluminum, paired with Goodyear Eagle F1 245/40R20 front tires and 275/35R20 rear tires; Brembo 4-piston front brake calipers; 3.27 ratio mechanical limited-slip differential; Track-cooling package which includes of differential and transmission coolers, engine oil; Suede steering wheel with shorter-throw shifter; Camaro SS fuel system intended for greater cornering; Recaro seats and PDR data/video recording system; Satin black hood, three-piece rear spoiler and front splitter; and Dual mode exhaust Oppenheiser notes that this Camaro V-6 offers the best performance in its category, attributing the achievement to its low curb weight (below 3,500 pounds), precise suspension due to the FE3, and the perfectly balanced front-to-rear weight optimized for track performance.

Press Release

NEW 1LE PACKAGES ELEVATE CAMARO TRACK CAPABILITIES

The Chevrolet Camaro 1LE performance package returns for 2017, poised to set new benchmarks for attainable track performance.

The package builds off the success of the previous-generation 1LE, offering increased handling and track performance. In response to customer demand, Chevrolet will offer two distinct 1LE packages, for both V6 and V8 models, each visually distinguished with a satin black hood, specific wheels and more.

For the first time, the 1LE package will be available on Camaro 1LT or 2LT coupes equipped with the 3.6L V6. Featuring more aggressive suspension tuning, standard Brembo brakes and Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, the LT 1LE delivers an estimated 0.97G in cornering grip. Available Recaro seats will keep you planted through the corners, and an available Performance Data Recorder will allow you to view and share your track experience.

The new 1LE package for Camaro 1SS models includes magnetic ride control, with a new FE4 suspension tuning and a new, segment-exclusive electronic limited slip differential (eLSD). Paired with massive Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, lateral acceleration will exceed 1G. Additional features available on the 1LE package include standard Recaro seats and a Performance Data Recorder (PDR), new to the Camaro lineup.

As a result, the 1LE package elevates the award-winning performance that earned Camaro the 2016 Motor Trend Car of the Year and Car and Driver 10Best awards.

“The Camaro 1LE packages follow a recipe any track-day enthusiast will appreciate,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “Start with a lightweight, stiff structure and then add higher levels of suspension stiffness and damping, more aggressive tires, higher downforce, more powerful brakes and more cooling.

“The result delivers better performance in all measures,” said Oppenheiser. “In our development tests, the V-6 Camaro 1LE delivers lap times comparable with the previous-gen V-8 model. The 2016 Camaro SS 1LE sets the new benchmark for the segment, lapping the Big Willow track at Willow Springs three seconds faster than the standard Camaro SS.”

The new 1LE packages are available in late 2016, on 2017 Camaro SS and LT V-6 coupes equipped with manual transmissions. Pricing and performance data will be announced at a later date.
