Due to increasing demand for its most fuel-efficient products, Chrysler Group will add 850 workers at the Belvidere, Ill. plant to act as the second shift for its Dodge Calibers. The second shift will begin work on October 5 and will enable the company to produce 10,000 more Calibers this year. The Caliber recorded high sales in the Cash for Clunkers program. The other two models being manufactured in Belvidere -- the Jeep Compass and Patriot -- will continue to be produced at current levels. Michael Accavitti, CEO of the Dodge brand, said that while demand has been increasing, the company is concerned about the volatility in the industry and will continue to monitor market conditions. The company declined to reveal the extent of each model's increase in demand but it has been reported earlier this week that it added about 50,000 units to its 2009 production schedule in its other plants.
