Auto critics and analysts were very impressed with Chrysler’s overhauled model lineup. Last week, tests were done on eight new models, which have shown much improvement over the models they’re replacing. In the second half of 2010, 16 new or significantly upgraded models from Chrysler Group's Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep brands were set to be introduced. Of these, many are expected to arrive in showrooms in the next few weeks.
It would be clear by early 2011 if consumers like the makeover that was started in mid-2009 when Italy's Fiat S.p.A. took management control and part ownership as Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy last year. This week, rival General Motors Co. is expected to offer shares in an initial public offering.
Two previous owners of Chrysler, Germany's Daimler AG and private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, had not come up with new models for the North American market. Aaron Bragman of IHS Automotive, had road-tested six new Dodge and two new Chrysler models last week. He asserts that Chrysler should have done this in the past five years.
