Chrysler Group's Windsor, Ontario, assembly plant will be closed until Feb. 1 due to "supplier challenges," according to Canadian Auto Workers President Ken Lewenza. He said that Chrysler wouldn't share the identity of this supplier though. Since the supplier didn't fulfill the contract, there would be legal ramifications. Chrysler spokeswoman Mary Gauthier confirmed that Feb. 1 is the expected date for the plant to resume production.

Rick Laporte, president of Local 444 of the Canadian Auto Workers, said that he was informed that the shutdown is a result of a supplier running short of plastic. Laporte said that this piece was for the key fob so he believes that it is a raw material issue. He remained optimistic though, saying that as long as it's not an inventory adjustment problem or a lack of sales, "it's a good problem to have."

While the plant is closed for the week, the 4,900 plant workers will collect 85% of their pay in employment insurance and supplemental benefits. Furthermore, 1,200 workers at five supplier plants are also affected by the closure.
