A new line of premium cars in China will be launched by PSA/Peugeot-Citroen's joint venture with Changan Automobile Group, according to Gregoire Olivier, the CEO of Asian operations. This new joint venture is expected to focus on light commercial vehicles and high-end cars. At the sidelines of an industry conference in Shanghai, Olivier told Automotive News China about plans to rival the German luxury brands. He said that the new line will be based on the Metropolis concept car made by the PSA Design Center in China. He expressed confidence that the Metropolis “will become a real car." He added that a high-level Citroen car that will be developed in China will have the same styling elements.
In the company’s aim to build up the premier line in China, it will promote the Metropolis as “emblematic of [its] approach." Olivier didn’t give a production volume estimate or indicate when production will start. Reports indicate that the Metropolis will be named the DS9, making it the flagship of Citroen's DS model line. The Metropolis measures 5300mm long, 2000mm wide and 1400mm tall and is built on the same platform as the Citroen C6 and Peugeot 407.
It is the first product from the brand's international design team, which has been based in Shanghai since 2008. The concept was equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. In addition, a 2.0-liter V-6 gasoline engine and an electric motor were partnered to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The powertrain has an output of 460 hp. [via autonews - sub. required]
