The COUPETORINO is an engineering and styling study intended at converting series and off-set vehicles with dependable technical solutions although preserving the identity of the car in the process. With this goal in mind the legendary Mercedes-Benz SL spider was voted as a lone example. Its first architectural design was converted into a proper coupe. In the midst of the different design studies led by STUDIOTORINO in conjunction with Istituto di Arte Applicata e Design (IAAD) and casually offered to the Mercedes Design Center in Como to Professor Peter Pfeiffer, a more standard Italian coupe style was opted. Included in this venture is an accurate 1:4 scale model individually modeled by Alfredo Stola and an exhibit in photographs which includes all of its developmental phases, from its birth to its fulfillment.
A serious study provides all of the construction methods and aerodynamics with the objective of making an ideally functional example with the dependability similar to that of series vehicles. COUPETORINO was showcased on December 12, 2008 at the Première that happened at the Turin Gallery with "Bespoke Coachwork" as the exhibit theme. The style of the COUPETORINO, directed by Alfredo Stola, was achieved by way of collaboration with Istituto di Arte Applicata e Design (IAAD) and specifically with Piotr Degler Jablonski, apprentice who contributed to its creation as part of his last placement.
The theme is obvious. To show an off-set beginning with the Mercedes SL and alter it into a coupé while preserving its identity and putting in a dash of Italian stylishness in order to make it unique. At the onset, research went in different directions and after some designs the initial selection concentrated on a couple of fast-backs and a typical coupe.
Afterwards, on July 9, 2008, at the Mercedes Design Center in Como a casual and genial conference among Professor Peter Pfeiffer, Dr. Michele Paganetti and Alfredo Stola, Studiotorino is offered valuable propositions as to which direction will be selected for the development of the scale variant of "our C version" or 'all'italiana' as what a traditional coupe is popularly called.
For "Torino World Design Capital 2008" event, Mercedes has amply provided a 1:4 scale version of the SL, essential factor for the designing of the COUPETORINO version. The variant was made in a typical way, that is, by hand. Actually, the rear is totally modified and was particularly modeled by Alfredo Stola with the cooperation of student intern Piotr Degler Jablonski for the design. The debut of COUPETORINO on December 12, 2008 in the exhibit "Bespoke Coachwork" at Turin Gallery will showcase besides a photographic display of all the designs and developmental phases, a 1:4 scale version intentionally with the wheels absent, in one color of bronze on a see-through base just like a statue masterpiece.
