The head of Daihatsu Motor Co. Teruyuki Minoura denied media reports that the company was working with parent Toyota Motor Corp. on a compact, low-cost car for emerging markets. Speaking at the launch of the new Tanto Exe microcar in Tokyo, Minoura said that he sees a big role for Daihatsu to be the leader in the development of small and more affordable cars within the Toyota group. In addition, Daihatsu aims to raise its sales by 3% next year with growth centered on Indonesia and Malaysia. Minoura admitted to feeling a "strong sense of crisis" as competition became stiffer in the auto industry and especially since biggest rival Suzuki Motor Corp. sealed a strategic tie-up with Volkswagen AG. Minoura said that the company needs to focus its energy on being able to offer a "small, affordable and fuel-efficient mini-vehicle" to the world.
