Talks have been ongoing since about three months ago between Daimler and supplier Robert Bosch GmbH on a new joint venture to develop and produce electric motors for all-electric vehicles in Europe. They recently confirmed that they have entered an official agreement and that production will start in 2012. The joint venture is named EM-motive GmbH and its headquarters and manufacturing facilities will be located in Hildesheim.

Its engineering site will be positioned in the Stuttgart to keep near to its parent firms. By the fourth of the 2011, the joint venture will have about 100 employees. Heading the EM-motive GmbH are two directors, one from Daimler and the other one from Bosch. They will be of equal rank. The electric motors that the joint venture will produce will be distinct due to their modular design. What this means is that they could be used by a broad range of all-electric vehicles.

Beginning in 2012, the electric vehicles of Mercedes-Benz and smart will use these traction motors. The first to get these motors is the new generation of the smart fortwo electric drive, which will start selling in early 2012. The joint venture has set a goal to build over one million electric motors by 2020. Wolf-Henning Scheider, the member of the board of management of Robert Bosch GmbH responsible for the Chassis Systems Control, Electrical Drives, and Starter Motors and Generators divisions, said that this alliance stands for an investment to secure the European automotive industry’s future. He also said that this is “a perfect addition” to its electric motor lineup for its customers.
