Daimler CEO: ‘it will take until 2012 or 2013 before the U.S. auto market recovers’

Dieter ZetscheDaimler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche predicts that the US auto market will recover in 2012 or 2013 to levels seen before the recession. Zetsche, who spoke to reporters in New York, offered a cautious outlook for industrywide U.S. auto sales in 2010. He said that he does expect some growth “to somewhere between 10 million to 11 million (units).”

He anticipates that sales in 2009 would total to a figure that’s just above 10 million cars, crossovers and light trucks, compared to the 13.1 million units sold in 2008. It’s interesting to note that the Daimler forecast for 2010 sales is more cautious than other industry forecasts, including those from other major automakers. Analyst CSM Worldwide has forecast industrywide U.S. sales of 11.8 million cars and light trucks for 2010. J.D. Power’s prediction isn’t far off with 11.5 million.
