Daimler’s Jerome Guillen moves to Tesla

Jerome Guillen has moved from Daimler AG to U.S. electric sports car manufacturer Tesla Motors Inc. A Tesla spokeswoman said that Daimler, which has a five percent stake in Tesla, had been ''very supportive'' of the move. The spokeswoman said Guillen recently joined Tesla as program director on the carmaker's Model S program. The Model S premium electric sedan is set to be released in 2012. Tesla provides lithium-ion battery packs and charging electronics to electric versions of Daimler subsidiary Smart's ForTwo minicar.
Unnamed sources told Germany's "Manager Magazin" that the 38-year-old Guillen was regarded as a strong contender for promotion to the Daimler executive board in the future. Guillen was the director of Daimler's business innovations project, where he led the development of new business opportunities. Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche brought Guillen over to the unit in 2007 after heading up the Company's U.S. truck subsidiary, Freightliner.
Barely a year after its separation from Chrysler, Daimler was once again setting its sights on expansion. Guillen was assigned to assemble a team of 15 department heads and began operations checking new business opportunities for the company. Guillen is credited for the car-sharing concept Car2Go, which Daimler plans to roll out globally. [via autonews - sub. required]
