At the opening of the Detroit Auto Show, GM introduced its new Chevrolet Spark Concept which is a variant of a soon coming global city vehicle due for sale in early 2010 and is largely patterned after the Chevrolet Beat Concept. GM opted to rebrand this important model in order to compete with Fiat and Ford in the UK. According to Bob Lutz, GM's product manager, the reason why GM made the Spark is to change public perception concerning the cars they make.
The Spark, which received 2 million consumer votes in contrast to two other bigger concepts, is an inexpensive vehicle the automaker is eager to put on the market as soon as they can. A more conservative, but production-ready, Spark will be revealed in March a the Geneva Auto Show.
Although no information have been made available concerning powertrain choices, it is highly likely that cost-effective, low CO2 emitting gasoline and diesel engines will be featured considering the attempt of GM to change its gas-guzzling profile. Possibilities would include the 1.3-liter CDTi diesel from the Vauxhall Corsa and the 1.0-liter 3-cylinder Suzuki Splash powertrain.
