At last! The new Audi Sportback Concept was officially unveiled today at the 2009 North American International Automobile Show (NAIAS). The new concept from the German manufacturer symbolizes, according to the manufacturer the Sportback principle in its purest form in the combination of elegance, sportiness and variability. Under the hood of this concept we find the 3.0-liter TDI engine (also known as world's cleanest diesel) found also on the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI, capable to deliver 225 hp (165 kW) and 550 Nm (405.66 lb-ft) of torque.
The engine is connected to a new 7-speed tiptronic transmission. Weighing 1,800 kilograms (3,968.32 lb) the concept has a drag coefficient of 0.30 and hits 62 mph (100 km/h) in less than 7 seconds while the top speed is limited electronically to 245 km/h (152mph). The Sportback Concept delivers a fuel economy of 5.9 l/100 km (39.87 US mpg) while CO2 emissions are close to 156 g/km (251 g/mile).
Under the big 10-spoke, 21-inch wheels the Audi Sportback Concept features new ceramic brakes for effective deceleration even under the most demanding conditions. The brakes are capable to last four times longer than the conventional steel disks: up to 300,000 kilometers (186,411 miles). The front axle features 380-millimeter (14.96-inch) ceramic disks while the rear disks have a diameter of 356 millimeters (14.02 inches).
In order to stop in time the new vehicle is fitted with 6-piston monobloc aluminum brake calipers. Inside, the concept features horizontal lines and large surfaces. The big glass roof accentuates also the feeling of spaciousness.
In the driver-oriented cockpit, the air vents, instrument cluster and retracting MMI monitor are outlined by a filigree aluminum border. The interior design is tidy and downright purist yet elegant at the same time.
