The latest addition to BMW’s widely acclaimed M lineup is the BMW 1 Series, which is aimed at members of the public who have a thirst for high performance sports cars. Other successful BMW M products are the BMW 3.0 CSL, the mid-engined M1 and the M535i. Apparently, the motorsport heritage has been passed on to the smallest vehicle in BMW's range, resulting to a more agile and lighter version of the popular compact sedan.
The BMW 1 Series M Coupe is the first vehicle that BMW M GmbH has worked on for this class. It sought to incorporate race-oriented performance in a car that is designed for daily use.
BMW 1 Series M Coupe uses chassis technology that stemmed directly from motor racing and this was then combined with the powerful twin-turbocharged in-line six cylinder engine, which delivers 340 hp and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft).
This enabled the vehicle to sprint from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.9 seconds while the 125 mph (200 km/h) mark is reached in 17.3 seconds. The design features on the new 1 Series M are as impressive as its level of performance.
To boost the aerodynamics and handling of the vehicle, BMW's M division added functional and styling features. The 1 Series M is 55 mm (about 2 inches) wider than the 135i Coupe so that the vehicle can have an optimized axle track, which was required to attain a dynamic behavior that's specific to this model.
The interior, which is designed exclusively for this model, features sport seats covered in black Boston leather contrasting with the orange-colored stitching. The highly sought-after M-badge is embossed in the headrests. The hotly-anticipated 2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupe will go on sale with a base MSRP of $47,010, including $875 Destination & Handling fee!
