2012 Detroit Auto Show: Acura ILX Concept is firm’s next luxury compact sedan

Article by Christian Andrei, on January 9, 2012

This is the Acura ILX Concept, a so-called concept version of firm’s next luxury compact sedan that is scheduled to be launched in Spring 2012. The new car will be positioned as the gateway to the Acura brand and will feature three different powertrains, including Acura's first-ever gas-electric hybrid. According to Acura, the new ILX combines luxury, performance and efficiency.

The new ILX models will feature an entry-level model powered by a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, a high-performance model with a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission and as we said, a hybrid model powered by a 1.5-liter gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain.

Regarding the interior, Acura promises a high–quality, well-appointed interior that is smart, spacious and sport. Moreover, the ILX will feature a smart entry keyless access system and pushbutton start, along with Pandora internet radio interface and SMS text message function for smart connectivity with the world.

Just like any other Acura model, the ILX will be offered as standard with plenty of features, different trim levels (that will include a Technology Package), multiple transmission choices, and excellent standard safety features. The safety features include Acura's acclaimed Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure, front, side and side-curtain airbags, 4-channel anti-lock brakes and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA).

Inside the Acura ILX, one will observe that the interior is well-appointed and displays high quality. In addition, the interior is sporty, smart, and has a lot of room. There will be a number of high value features like the Pandora internet radio interface and the Keyless Access System which allows not only for smart entry but also for a push button start.

A SMS text message function is fitted as well to ensure connectivity. Similar to what it has done with its other models, Acura will be offering for the ILX a number of features fitted as standard along with multiple trim levels like the Technology Package and Premium Package. Under the Premium Package for example, the seats will be covered in leather and front seats will be heated as well. To make sure that the cabin passengers are not disturbed by noise, it is equipped with Active Sound Cancellation.

Its 350-watt stereo system has been upgraded and it even has a rear view camera. Safety features are not an issue with the highly praised Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure. There are airbags on the side and front and there are even side-curtain ones. Fitted as well are the Vehicle Stability Assist and the anti-lock 4-channel brakes.

Although the ILX has yet to be actually certified, the company expects that it will be able to earn a crash safety rating from the IIHS and even the NHTSA. On the outside, the ILX reveals a chassis that can deliver an athletic and agile driving experience in addition to offering confident handling with refinement at the highest of levels.

The reason for this is that it makes use of a multi-link suspension in the rear and a MacPherson strut on its front. It also has Amplitude Reactive Dampers. To be able to offer precision handling and at the same time excellent ride comfort, these dampers run in two difference performance parameters. The ILX offers remarkable steering feel due to the Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering which helps improve fuel efficiency too.

Acura ILX Concept

The Acura ILX Concept is the precursor to an all-new Acura luxury compact sedan scheduled for launch in Spring 2012. To be positioned as the gateway to the Acura brand, the ILX will feature three different powertrains, including Acura's first-ever gas-electric hybrid.

"First time luxury buyers place the highest value on exterior styling, affordability and environmental issues and that's a virtual definition of what we have created with the new Acura ILX," said Jon Ikeda, head of the Acura Design Studio. "The strategy behind this new model is to position ILX as the first opportunity for many young buyers to enter the luxury market."

Sleek, sporty and aerodynamically efficient, the exterior of the all-new Acura ILX combines luxury, performance and efficiency. A beautifully styled luxury sedan, the ILX Concept has a compact, yet formal proportion, targeting a very professional image. The Acura ILX delivers both, with a greenhouse that provides excellent visibility, an aerodynamic low and wide stance, the ILX is immediately recognizable as an Acura

The lineup of ILX models will include an entry-level model powered by a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine; a high-performance model with a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission; and a 1.5-liter gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain, Acura's first-ever hybrid offering.

The ILX will feature a high–quality, well-appointed interior that is smart, spacious and sporty. It will offer a number of new, high-value features, including a smart entry keyless access system and pushbutton start, along with Pandora internet radio interface and SMS text message function for smart connectivity with the world.

As with all Acura models, the ILX will have a long list of standard features, different trim levels (that will include a Technology Package), multiple transmission choices, and excellent standard safety features— including Acura's acclaimed Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ body structure, front, side and side-curtain airbags, 4-channel anti-lock brakes and Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA™). Acura anticipates that the ILX will achieve top ratings in both NHTSA and IIHS crash safety testing.

The new ILX will be manufactured exclusively by Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC, in its Greensburg, Ind. plant— one of only three plants in the world to receive J.D. Power and Associates' 2011 Platinum Award for outstanding quality.
